The first time Joel Spoelstra used this tool was in 1979 when he was 37-years-old, and newly employed by the Portland Trail Blazers as Vice-President of Marketing. Joel learned that the Blazers received a fee of $25,000 a year from a local radio station for exclusive rights to broadcast the team's games on radio. Spoelstra thought that was way undervalued, so his outrageous idea was for the Blazers to bring their radio broadcasts "in-house".
