The best way for solopreneurs to sell their services is to prove to prospects they are too busy to take on their project. Projecting "passionate ambivalence" about working with someone is the secret sauce to growing sales with the clients you most want to work with at prices and terms you feel great about.

As counterintuitive as it may sound, proving to people you're doing amazing work and that you don't need their business is a very strong approach to sales. By all means signal you're passionate about doing the job, explain why you and your product or service are the perfect fit, but then spell out your terms and wait to see if you hear back. Be passionate, project ambivalence, and become more successful.

"In short, if you want to sell successfully, you can be extremely, authentically passionate about earning and doing a piece of work. At the same time, you need to believe and create a perception that you are so good, so hard to attain, and so unattached to whether you 'win' a piece of work that you ought not even to ask for the business. You can't need the business. You can't be accommodating in your pricing strategy in a way that implies that you don't value yourself or what you do. You can't send an automated flow of persistent emails about how great you are and how ready you are to get busy on a piece of business, because someone amazing wouldn't have time for this. They would be busy doing other work at premium price points. Instead, you passionately argue for why you or your product are the perfect fit, you spell out a few terms, and you wait to see if you hear back. If you have aligned your desires; your natural or acquired gifts; and the product, service, or 'pitch' you're making, you often can successfully grow your business through passionate ambivalence."
