In July 2001, Google founders Larry and Sergey did away with managers. They asked all their software engineers to report directly to Wayne Rosing who had joined the company about six months earlier. That lasted for about a year until Bill Campbell started working with Google. He immediately suggested Google appoint some managers so that workers had someone they could learn from and to make sure everyone is accountable.
